The Struggle is Real

How Embracing Internal Resistance is Essential to Growth

As children we all learn about how the caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly.

But most people don’t know about the remarkable struggle it overcomes in the process.

Imagine a caterpillar.

A little leaf-munching creature content eating its way through life. This is its everyday grind, not unlike many of us in our daily routines.

One day, a feeling arises within, signaling "enough."

So, the caterpillar stops eating and wraps itself up in a chrysalis, a hard shelled sort of cocoon.

Inside, enzymes activate and the caterpillar melts down into goo.

It sounds kind of gross, right? But in that mess is where the magic happens.

In the meltdown, what biologists call ‘imaginal discs' start to form and the caterpillars' immune system immediately starts attacking them.

Faced with resistance, the imaginal discs keep forming faster and faster, link together and eventually overcome the caterpillars immune system.

Eventually these disks become ‘imaginal cells’ that use the raw material of the caterpillars remains to create the butterfly's body.

When the caterpillar turns into a butterfly, it doesn't just get wings. It transforms into a totally new creature.

This doesn't happen despite the struggle; it happens because of it.

Taking it a step further.

The physical struggle to break free from the confines of the chrysalis, actually stimulates the circulation of fluids into the wings, helping them to expand and strengthen.

Without this struggle, the butterfly's wings would not develop properly, rendering it unable to fly.

The caterpillar, like us, is born with potential. But it's through overcoming struggle that it transforms and is able to fly.

The Problem

Do you ever feel stuck, unable to make progress towards your goals or dreams?

It's easy to view this inner resistance as a sign that you're on the wrong path or incapable of change.

When things get hard you start to question your abilities, doubt your decisions, and feel overwhelmed by the discomfort of stepping outside your comfort zone.

Resistance is a natural part of the growth process.

Our brains are wired to conserve energy and that means sticking with what we are familiar with and resisting change, even if it isn't serving us.1

But too often, we let it hold us back.

We avoid discomfort, succumb to fears, and give up on our dreams, thinking that struggle means we’re not cut out for success.

Why It Matters

When we view our inner struggles as opportunities to become stronger, we can break through limitations and achieve things we never thought possible.

Research has shown that facing and overcoming challenges can lead to increased resilience, improved mental health, and greater personal growth.2

Embracing internal resistance:

Strengthens Resilience
By working through internal resistance, we develop the mental and emotional strength to bounce back from setbacks and handle future challenges more effectively.

Enhances Self-Awareness
When we face our inner struggles head-on, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, our beliefs, and our patterns of behavior.

Increases Confidence
Each time we successfully navigate through resistance and make positive changes, we build self-confidence and trust in our ability to grow and transform.

The Personal Impact

Embracing the pushback we feel inside can actually be a game-changer. It's like finding hidden doors to growth and getting stronger every time we dare to open one.

Breaking free from the old habits and fears that keep us stuck becomes possible.

When we face our doubts head-on, we start making real changes, living in a way that truly reflects who we are and what we want out of life.3

Leadership Impact

When leaders openly confront and navigate through their own challenges, they don't just lead by example—they weave resilience, adaptability, and courage into the very fabric of their teams.

This approach fosters an environment where taking risks, learning from failure, and pushing beyond comfort zones become the cornerstone of collective growth.

"The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance."

How to Embrace Internal Resistance

Acknowledge Resistance
When you feel internal resistance, acknowledge it as a natural part of the growth process. Recognize that it is an opportunity to become stronger and more resilient.

Identify Your Fears
Name the fears and doubts holding you back. When fears remain vague and undefined, they tend feel larger in our minds. Naming our fears brings them into the light, making them more tangible and manageable.

Reframe Your Mindset
Instead of viewing resistance as a sign of failure or weakness, see it as evidence that you are pushing yourself to grow and transform. Embrace the discomfort as a necessary part of the journey.

Practice Self-Compassion
Be kind with yourself and manage your self talk as you navigate through resistance. Recognize that growth is a process, and it's okay to experience setbacks and challenges.

Seek Support
Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your growth. Find mentors, join support groups, or work with a coach to help you navigate through resistance and stay accountable.

Summary

Embracing our struggles is the key to personal transformation.

By viewing resistance as an opportunity for growth, we can break through limitations, develop greater resilience, and achieve our full potential.

Just like the butterfly, we must become stronger through the struggles we face so that we can eventually fly.
